The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01 am Monday, May 14th and runs through Sunday, May 20th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 22 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

Officially signed-up for the Bout. God, I feel so awkward—been away from blogging for so long, do I even know HOW. Long story short: I’m on vacation and with lots of time to spare so let’s do this.

  • Read every single day
  • Participate in at least 3 challenges
  • Interact with fellow readathoners
  • Read the following books:

Day 1 | May 14

Reading progress: 25% of The Woman in the Window

Challenge: Introduce yourself #insixwords — Introvert not always trying her best

Day 2 | May 15

Reading progress: got to 50% of The Woman in the Window

Challenge: Year of You (thanks to Courtney Lynn) — Share a book that was published the year you were born. If you don’t wish to disclose your age (that’s fine; you’ll get no judgment either way here), pick a book that was significant to your childhood.

I was born in the magical year of 1985 and I’m so happy to share a book that’s a favorite of mine, by a super favorite author and that is… *drum roll*… FIRE AND HEMLOCK BY DIANA WYNNE JONES, first published by Greenwillow Books.

I read this book back in 2016 and even though I was already acutely aware of DWJ’s uncanny way of storytelling, my mind was blown just like the first time I read DWJ. This was even more remarkable because Fire and Hemlock is a retelling of “Tam Lin”,—the guy who is trapped by an evil fey queen and in need of rescue from the maiden who is his true love— again, something I was familiar with having read Tam Lin retellings before. But DWJ was something else and so is her work. I actually reviewed this book if anyone feels like wanting to know more about my feelings on the subject. 1985=MAGICAL. B-)

Day 3 | May 16

Reading progress: Finished The Woman in the Window; started Wintersong

Challenge: Show Me Your Precious

Day 4 | May 17

Reading progress: Read about 10% of Wintersong (not a very good day)

Challenge: Read Alikes (thanks to Erica @2020hines_sight) — If you liked a particular book, then recommend a book(s) similar to the one you liked. If you’ve played our “If you like . . . try . . . ” challenge before, you’ve got the idea!

I’m actually going to recommend the book I finished yesterday for the read-a-thon, The Woman in the Window by A.J.Finn, for those who enjoyed The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Definitely read both if you’re a mystery/thriller fan.

Day 5 | May 18

Reading progress: Had to DNF Wintersong at 20% because I disliked the heroine so much and other reasons; started reading Buried by C.J. Carmichael.

Challenge: Space Scavenger Hunt (thanks to Liz @LizHannah25)

Mercury – Favourite short story/novella

22914373(Matt de la Pena’s story!)

Venus – Favourite book with female protagonist & Earth – Favourite book about nature/nature word in the title

Mars – Favourite book with a red cover

Jupiter – Favourite tome over 500 pages

Saturn – Favourite book with circle/ring on the cover/in the title

21060(a crown is a circle? it’s the best I could do—really love this book)

Uranus – Favourite book set in winter

Neptune – Favourite book set at sea, on a boat, or under water

Pluto – Favourite books featuring a dog/with a dog on the cover

Moon – Favourite book set anywhere other than Earth

Sun – Favourite book set in summer
Space – Favourite book set in space

Day 6 | May 19

Reading progress: read about 20% of Buried

Challenge: Share Your Favorite Bout of Books Moment

Day 7 | May 20

Reading wrap-up: Read The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, and 80% of Buried by C.J. Carmichael. Gave up on Wintersong around 20% (no regrets!). I really needed this read-a-thon, having neglected my to-be-read pile for so long. One book + 80% might not seem much but means a lot to me. Hope I can participate in the next Bout!

  1. You’re doing awesome!!! I’m looking forward to reading The Woman in the Window eventually! Happy Bout of Books!

    • Thank you, Sarah, you are too kind!
It’s so good, I’m happy I chose it for the read-a-thon because it was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. I hope you like it when you get to read it. 🙂

  2. A great variety of books. I really need to revisit Laini Taylor’s world as I loved book 1…I will get there. So many series’ to read and not enough time!

    • Angelica, the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series only gets better with each book, so if you loved the first, you will definitely LOVE the other two. The last one blew my mind!
